The Wise Penny Storefront

The Wise Penny

JLS opened the Wise Penny Thrift Shop in Capitol Hill on February 12, 1960. The shop sold gently-used women's clothing and other items at discount prices. It doubled its space within the first five years as it became the major fundraising project for the League. It was staffed by League members, and members were required to bring in a certain quota of merchandise a year and work at least three hours annually in the shop. All the proceeds went to fund community projects. In its first year, Wise Penny made $6,000 and over twice that by 1963. By 1982, the Wise Penny was clearing $100,000 annually.
